Strategically located along the Persian Gulf, Iran has always been a major player in the oil and gas industries worldwide. Iran is OPEC’s second biggest producer of oil and it also has the world’s second largest natural gas reserves. The Iranian petroleum industry is mature and is capitalized on vast experience, using the latest technology and highly skilled manpower.
Iran has witnessed rapid expansions and developments of gas fields, high pressure piplines, and gas processing facilities during recent past years.
Iran has the second largest gas reserves in the worldafter Russian Federation. Its proven gas reserves stood at 27.5 trillion cubic meters at the end of 2005, equal to approximately 16% of total global reserves. Iran now produces more than 424 million cubic meters of gas per day to feed petrochemical units, power plants, local industries, households consumption and export to neighboring countries.
As the new policy of NIOC for becoming an important player in worldwide gas market, and boost the export of natural gas is parallel with the planning for the development of the South Pars Gas Field as Iran’s major gas field, it decided to establish a subsidiary specialized in the planning, development, financing, investment, implementation, operation and marketing of related gas projects in Iran.
In this regard the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) was established in December 2002 as Iran’s main vehicle for the development of Gas Export Projects.
